Our stay: May 2-9, 2026 (arrived on day 2 of the grand re-opening)
Before I get into feedback on the resort, we would like to celebrate the staff that helped make our experience so great:
* Sandy - If anyone deserves a promotion and a bed on-site, it’s Sandy. She seemed to be everywhere, all day long. From beach runs in the morning to sports bar events at night, she was there. I loved how she helped rally people up to play volleyball (which I played every day), led all of the activities around the pool and beach, balancing the right amount of fun without being too much. I can’t remember her colleague’s name (maybe Gonzalo?) but he was a great sport and addition to her too.
* Danira - The person that made it feel like she was waiting on us to arrive at the beach or pool every day. Danira is very personable and understanding manager, and shows her commitment to guests through her work every day. She was great with accommodating requests to move our reserved cabanas due to construction noise or preference changes, helping with ordering food, receiving feedback on new rules, and helping make our pool and beach time an enjoyable and relaxing experience.
* Daniel (Concierge) - We worked with Daniel to reserve cabanas ahead of time and restaurants while we were there. Each interaction with him felt personal and genuine and I think he is a great fit for his role. I hope he finds ways to showcase his skills and care for his work in other ways across the resort.
* Daniel Angulo - Daniel was a pleasure to work with and has an obvious passion for creating a speakeasy environment that is more original than anything I’ve seen back home. He was intentional about the invitation, the vibe, and atmosphere in the room. I appreciate his commitment and sticking to what creates a unique experience for guests despite the pressure he may get from some that don’t appreciate the prohibition era vibes.
* Rodrigo - As he knows, leaders come last. Rodrigo has a passion for creating an environment that people enjoy and want to come back to, which is shown in his work product. His care and attention to the choices for entertainment, events, and DJs was much appreciated and I enjoyed talking to him (almost every day) to express how much we loved the pool and sunset DJs. This is something that makes us want to come back again this year.
To keep the feedback constructive and end on the positives, I’ll start with what could have gone better:
* No more ordering food at the pool without the top tier cabana: This was by far my biggest pain point as surrounding luxury resorts do it. You also can’t take food to-go from any restaurant anymore, only from the buffet. I understand some can’t hold their liquor and riff raff likes to make messes but I think that’s where people should be cut off or asked to leave. At a resort with kids, this would make sense, but we chose an adults-only resort for a reason. I’d like to see these rules relaxed so the more mature guests, like everyone we saw over our 7 day stay, can enjoy munchies like guacamole nachos in the cabana that they paid for.
* Water pressure and temperature in the rooms: The temperature and pressure are both sporadic at times, resulting in scorched sunburns, trial and error to get it back to the desired temperature, and waiting for a workable pressure in the shower.
* Energy preservation in the room is a little too aggressive: The lights and A/C both turn off if one person leaves the room. It also turns off the A/C at night if it doesn’t detect motion. This can be annoying as humidity can quickly get to 90%+, turning the room and the bed into what feels like a steam room.
* Too pushy with upgrades at dinner: We were offered to buy a premium beverage at nearly every restaurant for dinner, which I don’t mind cause I am occasionally interested in something special. What I felt was a problem was one particular dinner where the restaurant manager and our waiter both asked us to review the premium beverage menu on an iPad, not once, but a total of 4 times. There should be limits placed on staff for the number of times they can attempt to sell an upgrade to a table. This was annoying to deal with over and over, after already explaining why we didn’t want wine or champagne that night.
* Forgotten birthday on the last day of our trip: We stayed for 7 days and I personally mentioned my wife’s birthday to 3 different resort managers so we could have a small cake brought out and sing happy birthday to her. I’m not sure if this was a communication failure or what happened, but despite me dropping two hints to the waiter, it never happened. This resulted in my wife being very disappointed and us having to make plans to make up for it when we got home.
While this may seem like a lengthy list, we shared a lot of details in hopes that this feedback will be actioned on and create a better experience for guests that follow our stay.
Now, to get into the things that make us want to go back:
* Sunset DJ: The solo DJs (which were both females) were amazing. They played chill EDM type music, which was a great vibe on the patio by the pool and helped set the mood for a relaxing evening.
* Personable interactions: Bartenders who don’t even ask for your room number for a drink remember your name somehow. I even worked out a recipe for a spicy margarita on the first day and they remembered it all week.
* The new room renovations: I didn’t see one part of the resort that wasn’t renovated. The lobby now has big fans to keep air moving during evening shows. The rooms got a much needed upgrade and we really liked how spacious they feel now too.
* The beach bathrooms got the renovation they needed: If you’ve visited before the grand renovations, the beach bathrooms left a lot to be desired. They are now modern, well lit, and air conditioned. This was very needed and is every bit worth calling out.
* The Spa and Salon: We had a couples massage a couple of days after we arrived, which was an amazing experience. My wife also unexpectedly needed a hair appointment and loved the work that they did, even with a last minute request.
* Gifts and decorations for our anniversary: They went above and beyond to help us celebrate our anniversary on this trip by gifting us some champagne, a written anniversary card, and decorating our door to remind us how special it is every time we walked into our room.
* The refreshed restaurants: Every restaurant got a nice renovation and new menus. While we do miss the old menu at Pier 12 (aka Punta Vista), the new menu is still great for a snack or lunch with a beachfront view. We tried every included restaurant and were not disappointed. One did stand out apart from the others, which I will give it’s own mention below.
* The new Italian restaurant: This restaurant was by far our favorite. We went there 3 times over the week that we stayed and every visit built on top of the last. Everything from the appetizers to the atmosphere was great and we hope that this sparks some ideas for other restaurant ideas.
* The new Bokeh bar: We loved this, as well as the singers that did a great job matching the vibe. To avoid spoiling the surprise on this one, I encourage you to ask about it and get a reservation!
Overall, we had a great experience aside from some grand re-opening and communication hiccups. This place is special for us and we look forward to coming back soon!
